TEN

THERE'S something satisfying and relaxing about turning a piece of raw wood into a sleek and slender wand. Somehow, I always forget how free it makes me feel until I'm back at the wand shop with my materials all around me.

I think I've spent so much time wanting things from my life that are different from my family legacy that I've almost decided that I don't want any part of this.

Except that it's not true. I wouldn't mind if I never have to deal with another customer in my entire life, but if I was told that I could never make another wand? That would leave a huge hole inside me.

Not that I want to give up investigating either.

It's almost like I need to be two different people if I want to stand a chance of being content with my life.

I push all of those thoughts aside and focus on what I'm doing right now. The scent of wood and oils permeates the room, giving it a homely feel that always reminds me of Grammie. It's more than the smell in the air or the feel of the familiar tools in my hands. There's magic in the air. It's not the same as the magic in spells or potions, this is more primal. This is the magic of wand making.

Creating wands is really an art, one which I've honed ever since Grammie started teaching me. And it's one that's always come naturally to me. I don't have to fight the wood into the right shape, all I have to do is listen to what it has to become and what amplifiers are suited to it.

Maybe that's strange, but every wand maker I've ever met says they feel something similar. At least the ones who aren't charlatans.

I place one of the wands on the workbench and move to pick up Herbert so I can put him next to me. I've missed him while I've been out of the workshop.

"How's this?" I ask the cat.

Herbert's stoic look tells me everything I need.

Carefully, I move him to the right so he's positioned in the sun. "Better?"

If Herbert could purr out loud, the sound would fill the whole shop with its rumbling. All cats love the sun, that's just a fact. I give him a little pat on the head and continue on with my tasks, sorting through some of the receipts, boxing up some of Grammie's latest creations, and checking any orders we might've got.

The bell above the door tinkles and I look up to greet the newest customer. I force a huge smile on my face and remind myself I'm dealing with a member of the public and not a murder suspect.

Though sometimes, I think customers will make a murder suspect out of me.

A woman with a large coat and an expressionless face ventures in, her gaze gliding over the wands on the shelves. Dissatisfied, she makes it to the counter and puts a piece of paper down.

"I want to order a custom wand.
